November 17, 2008

Events of the Day:

Firefighter Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland
Gettysburg
Washington D.C. Temple

First Stop:

Firefighter Memorial

Blake Wright and Ralph Broadhead were killed in 1990 while fighting the 1st Cascade Springs Fire. Blake was one of my dad's really good friends, and worked at the Sheriff''s Office with him.

Next Stop:

Gettysburg

I loved LOVED loved Gettysburg. I like to think that I am somewhat of a History Buff, but nothing compared to my bro Dave. But you don't have to be a history buff to love the stories of Gettysburg.

We were lucky enough to have picked the Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address to visit Gettysburg.

Every State Memorial had a story... Most of them had the ancestors of those who fought at some point during the war holding a memorial service for those brave men.

These men were honoring those brave men from North Carolina I do believe. It was amazing to feel the dedication these men and women have to keeping these stories alive.

We arrived at Little Round Top just as the sun was setting, which was an amazing sight. Just to be able to look out over the battlefield, and to remember what happened there, is something I will never forget.

One of my favorite experiences of the trip was hearing Taps played at Sunset by a band at Little Round Top, playing period instruments, all in uniform. This is also something I will never forget.

Did I mention that it was FREEZING?!?!

Because there was so much to see at Gettysburg, we decided to make it a 2 day adventure, so after Little Round Top we headed back to the District, and stopped at the Temple on our way back.

President Hinckley

Joseph Smith

The Nauvoo Temple

I wish I had a picture of the Temple 'rising up' from the freeway. It was so cool to see!
